In order to maintain their own African identity and culture, many practiced the Yoruba religion, Candombl\u00e9, meaning a dance in honor of the Gods or Orix\u00e1s.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 EX\u00da: Orix\u00e1 sent by Olorum, the Supreme God, to create the universe.<br \/>\n\u00b7 PAD\u00ca CEREMONY: Is an offering of food and drink to Ex\u00fa, the feared messenger of Olorum, asking that the celebrants be allowed to make contact with the Orix\u00e1s.<br \/>\n\u00b7 YA\u00d4&#8217;S INITIATION: Celebrates the first public introduction of an initiate to the religion. Following a three-month period of seclusion, the Ya\u00f4 is welcomed by the deities as they are incorporated in the order celebrant&#8217;s bodies.<br \/>\n\u00b7 XIR\u00ca: Sequence of dances dedicated to the Orix\u00e1s.<br \/>\n\u00b7 ORIX\u00c1&#8217;S PANTHEON: Is a celebratory procession in which the Yoruba Gods pay homage to the new iniciate, revealing through their dances the special characteristics of their personalities:<\/p>\n<p>. Ogum: God of iron and war.<br \/>\n. Oxum: Goddess of rivers, lakes, and waterfalls.<br \/>\n. Omol\u00fa: God of skin deseases, plague, and death.<br \/>\n. Ians\u00e3: Goddess of the winds and storms.<br \/>\n. Oxossi: God of the forests and hunters.<br \/>\n. Oxal\u00e1: Supreme God of the pantheon.
